SUVA, Fiji (13 Dec 2000) -- Special Commonwealth envoy to Fiji Justice Pius Langa has informed Fiji officials that the interim government's timetable for a return to democracy is not good enough. The military-backed government has said it will take two years to return to democratic elections. "The Commonwealth would like an even speedier return to democracy than the interim government"s timetable," Langa said. Fiji remains extremely unstable after an attempted coup in May unleashed violence and lawlessness thoughout the country. Last month, in the worst violence since the coup attempt, eight people died and 30 were injured in a failed mutiny. | | Trouble in paradise...
