SUVA, Fiji (17 Dec 2000) -- The night-time curfew in the capital, Suva, has finally been lifted but not everyone is happy about it. Many Suva residents oppose the military decision to lift the curfew because they fear more violence and property destruction. Indo-Fijian shopkeepers who saw their businesses looted and burned last summer are among those who want the curfew to continue. Since rebels stormed parliament in May and violence spread across the country, night-time curfews were imposed throughout Fiji. Anyone caught out after dark was arrested and fined. Gradually, restrictions were scaled back and the curfew remained only in Suva and surrounding areas. | | Tensions remain high in Suva Fiji remains unstable after the military-installed government vowed to fight the country's high court ruling that the interim government is illegal. © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORK |
