PHUKET, Thailand (4 Jan 2005) -- The death toll in Thailand has reached 5,246 of which nearly half of the victims are foreign tourists who were on holiday when a monstrous tsunami hit on December 26.

At least 4,499 people remain missing and another 8,457 have been injured.

Officials in Thailand have warned that the death toll could reach 8,000 or more.

Dead bodies continue to wash ashore in Phuket, Krabi and Khao Lak where most of the fatalities and injuries occurred.

The tsunami was generated by a 9.0 earthquake off the northeast coast of Sumatra in Indonesia where at least 95,000 people have died. More than 150,000 people are confirmed dead as searchers continue to find bodies in coastal areas from Thailand to Africa.
