DURBAN, South Africa (9 Aug 2005) -- A 23-year-old professional scuba diver was arrested yesterday for allegedly hitting German woman Jennifer Buchs (26) on the head with a heavy-bottomed pan before strangling her and having sexual intercourse with her corpse at his Montclair flat almost two weeks ago.

The man, whose name cannot be released until he appears in court tomorrow, allegedly met Buchs's common-law husband, Johan Swanepoel, and his brother on July 18, when they went to fetch her from work. He apparently befriended the three and they all decided to go to a pub for a drink.

Serious and Violent Crime Unit provincial director Johan Booysen said the man allegedly took Buchs with him and, instead of going to a nightclub on the Bluff, made a detour into the Durban CBD before going to his Montclair flat, south of Durban.

Booysen told The Witness that when Buchs became uncomfortable with being in his flat and insisted on going home, the man went to the kitchen, brought out a heavy-bottomed pan and allegedly hit her over the head with it, strangled her and then had sexual intercourse with her.

Booysen said the man allegedly left her body in his flat and went out and watched rugby the next day, only later that evening allegedly wrapping her body in a blanket, putting it in his bakkie and driving to the South Coast where he threw the body over the Karridene Bridge. The man has been charged with kidnapping, rape and murder. He will appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court tomorrow.
