NEW ROSS, Ireland (15 Dec 2005) -- Over a thousand mourners gathered in New Ross for the funeral of scuba diver Billy O'Connor.

O'Connor (49) went missing on December 1 while searching for his friend Pat Colfer (37), the skipper of "The Rising Sun" which sank on November 29.

Naval Service divers recovered O'Connor's body from the seabed off the Saltee Islands on December 10.  Colfer's body has still not been found.

Friends and relatives remembered O'Connor as a quiet hero who often reached out to others in the community.

'Billy died doing what he loved to do. We can only thank God that he was eventually brought in to us,' said his brother Tommy at yesterday's Requiem Mass.
