HIGH SPRINGS, Florida — Salvo Diving owner Barry Miller has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison for grand theft. Miller, 44, of High Springs, faced a maximum sentence of 35 years in prison if convicted of multiple felony counts including first and third degree grand theft and trafficking after stealing over $100,000 worth of scuba diving equipment from Halcyon Manufacturing, his previous employer. Miller used the stolen equipment to start his own diving shop, Salvo Diving, in 2004. The reduced sentence resulted from a plea agreement that includes five years of probation. Miller must also pay restitution of $142,024, of which $82,024 was paid at the time of sentencing. Miller must pay the remaining sum in 24 consecutive monthly installments of $2,500. As part of the plea agreement, the trafficking count was dropped and Miller will be eligible for early probation after the restitution payments are completed. Halcyon Manufacturing CEO Jarrod Jablonski objected to a previous plea agreement that would have enabled Miller to avoid jail time. Jablonski told Circuit Judge David Grant he felt punishment that did not include jail time did not "fit the crime". On March 15, the same day Miller was sentenced, Halcyon released a statement in which Jablonski said he was happy to be done with the case and excited about moving on: "We are pleased to be freed from the malicious actions of a manager intent on doing us harm". Halcyon Manufacturing Production Manager Steve Pulliam echoed Jablonski's comments saying he was happy with the result. "The company in general, including the production associates, feel very good about the outcome," Pullman said. |
