LONDON, UK (16 Oct 2006) -- The London High Court has awarded £750,000 ($1.4 million) to the family of a military diver who died in a training tragedy.

Laura McAulay and her three-year-old daughter will receive the payout from the UK Ministry of Defence, which has admitted liability for the death of Lieutenant Paul McAulay.

Lt. McAulay died in November 2002 at the age of 27 during a Navy diver training exercise at Hornsea Island in Portsmouth.

After McAulay failed to resurface from the dive, support divers were unable to attempt an immediate rescue because they had not donned diving equipment.

Precious time was lost waiting for a diver to be brought from shore.

In separate litigation, the Winchester Crown Court acquitted diving instructor Anthony Watt last June. Watt had been accused of manslaughter.
