TACOMA, Washington (12 Jan 2007) -- A bank robber wearing a wetsuit under his clothes who planned to escape underwater with scuba diving equipment is going to jail.

Charles Everett Coma, 38, was sentenced to 16 years in prison for robbing $6,000 from Key Bank in Olympia in April 2004.

According the U.S. Attorneys office in Seattle, Coma robbed the bank at gunpoint and sped away in a car as police arrived at the scene.

Police units chased Coma to an industrial area in Budd Inlet where the bank robber leaped out of his car and attempted to escape into Puget Sound with scuba gear.

A police officer tackled Coma just before he reached the water.

Police found $6,000 and a rifle used in the robbery in the getaway car.
