Stolen dive boat

WEYMOUTH, UK (1 Feb 2008) — Cyber Diver is alerting scuba divers in the UK to be on the lookout for a dive boat stolen in Weymouth.

The £20,000 Viking Tornado 580 RIB boat is owned by Caversham Park Aquanauts located in Reading.

The dive club bought the boat after a four-year fundraising campaign and a grant from The Foundation for Sport and the Arts.

Police said thieves cut through a fence at the Blue Water Horizons boat yard at Ferrybridge and took the boat and its trailer.

The orange and grey boat is 5.8 meters long, has a grey outboard engine and there is a plaque on the forward bulkhead stating that the RIB was funded with a foundation grant.

Police said they want to interrogate two men who were at the boat yard and expressed interest in buying the boat a few hours before it was stolen sometime between late Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

Witnesses said the men were driving a flatbed truck that may have been a Renault Dodge.

According to the club's diving officer, David Jerram, the boat was insured but not for its full replacement value.

"The boat is insured but I don't think we'll get the full value back," Jerram told reporters. "As a small community club it will be a struggle to replace it."

Jerram, who described the theft as a "disaster for the club", said the boat is similar to coastguard RIB lifeboats.

Cyber Diver urges anyone with information about the theft or the whereabouts of the stolen boat to contact UK police on 01305 222222 or email David Jerram of Caversham Park Aquanauts:  do  @ cpanet.co.uk
