BSAC scuba divers remove dangerous fishing net

by LAMAR BENNINGTON @ CDNN - Cyber Diver News Network

PLYMOUTH, UK (28 Apr 2009) — A group of BSAC divers removed a dangerous and illegal fishing net from Plymouth Sound.

Seven members of the Plymouth Scuba Diving Club worked on the seabed off West Hoe to remove the net, which nearly killed a scuba diver four months ago.

Many divers complained about the net, but after authorities failed to remove it, dive club members decided to take action to eliminate a hazard that threatens divers and marine wildlife.

"They went down and cut the net into liftable sections before putting a lifting bag on each section, and then they sent them up," said dive club chairman Keith Hiscock. " We then hauled each section into the boat."

Hiscock said club divers also removed litter they found on the seabed.

He also urged scuba divers to be cautious when diving in the area.

"Divers should still be cautious when they're diving at West Hoe in case of any pieces of net still down there," Hiscock said.

Fishing nets are illegal in Plymouth Sound.
