WESTERN AUSTRALIA (27 Nov 2000) -- Two are dead and three injured after being overcome by fumes while doing maintenance work on a Great Barrier Reef pontoon.

Captain Graham John Hay, 25 years old, and Barnaby Houghton-Ward, 26 years old, collapsed and died in the bilge of a large pontoon that serves as an offshore base at Kelso Reef for the dive boat "2001."

Hay was the skipper of the boat and Houghton-Ward worked as a deckhand on the vessel, which is owned and operated by Pure Pleasure Cruises in Townsville.

Three other crew were critically injured and are in stable condition in hospital.

More than 60 divers and snorkelers aboard the 2001 were unharmed and returned safely to Townsville.
