At least 8 tourists dead, 20 missing in Thailand boat accident

KOH SAMUI, Thailand (26 Jan 2005) -- At least 8 tourists are dead and 20 are missing after a speedboat capsized off Koh Samui.

The boat was returning from a full moon rave party on Koh Samui, a popular scuba diving destination in the Gulf of Thailand.

Survivors said the boat was severely overloaded with as many as 60 passengers on a vessel designed to carry about half that many.

Officials could not confirm how many passengers the vessel was certified to carry, however, Thai police told CDNN the captain of the boat was drunk.

The dead included American, British, French, Israeli and Thais. Among the 20 missing are Americans, British, Australians, Swedes and Germans.

American survivor Lee Feldman said that too many people were on the boat and that when it capsized and started to sink, people panicked as they realized they were drowning.
