Young South African scuba diver killed in gruesome accident

DURBAN, South Africa (22 Feb 2005) -- A gruesome scuba diving accident has taken the life of a young South African scuba diver.

Andre Wolmarans, 20, died while cleaning a fishing trawler propeller. According to police, someone inside the vessel accidentally activate the propeller.

Wolmarans worked for Subtech Diving and Marine, a company that offers commercial diving services in the Durban area.

"Wolmarans was standing on the propeller and conducting a routine polish when the propeller was accidentally engaged from inside the vessel and he was killed," said Andre Krugel, Subtech's Director of health, safety and environmental quality.

 

Police rescue divers searched Durban harbor for more than seven hours before they found Wolmaran's body.

The accident is being investgated as a possible homicide.
