New Zealand diver in critical condition after 'popping' both lungs

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (23 Feb 2005) -- A New Zealand scuba diver is in critical condition after getting into trouble diving on the Rainbow Warrior shipwreck.

The 27-year-old man from Auckland was diving with a group of divers who found him unconscious at the surface.

He was rushed to Devonport Naval Hospital and later transferred to the critical care unit at Auckland Hospital.

Just two weeks ago, a 53-year-old British tourist died diving on the same wreck, a former Greenpeace vessel.

Chris Sames, the hyperbaric medical officer at the Devonport Naval Hospital, warned divers to follow basic dive safety rules to reduce the inherent risk of scuba diving.
