NAHANT, Massachusetts (15 June 2005) -- A popular associate professor in the biology department at Northeastern University has died scuba diving. Charles Ellis Jr, 64, was diving with three other divers including two students off the beach of the university's Marine Science Center when the accident happened. As the divers exited the water, they saw Ellis sitting still in very shallow water, less than a meter deep. The other divers thought he was taking off his fins until they saw him lying face down in the water. After pulling Ellis to the beach, they started CPR and called 911 for emergency medical assistance. Police and fire units responded to the call and rushed the victim to Salem Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy has been performed but the cause of death is still unknown. | | Professor Charles Ellis Jr. died scuba diving off the beach of Northeastern's Marine Science Center.
