Subtropic Dive Center captain dies after hair gets caught in boat engine

KEY WEST, Florida (2 Aug 2005) -- A Key West dive boat captain died in a freak accident aboard Subtropic Dive Center's 42-ft 'Island Diver'.

Captain Ralph Chiaro, 36, died instantly when he leaned down into the engine compartment and his hair became entangled in moving engine parts

The vessel was returning from a scuba diving trip to a reef off Key West when the fatal accident happened.

Chiaro had been working at Subtropic Dive Center for seven years and held a degree from Florida Keys Community College in diving technologies.

The accident is under investigation by the US Coast Guard.
