BLOCK ISLAND, R.I. (28 Aug 2005) -- An experienced diver who taught safe diving techniques died while scuba diving off the coast of Rhode Island.

Stephen Hardick, 60, was exploring the wreck of the U-853 German submarine about seven miles east of Block Island when the accident happened.

The experienced deep diver and scuba instructor was diving with three friends who were filming a documentary on the wreck.

Other divers called the Coast Guard and initiated CPR after they found Hardick unconscious at the surface after a dive to 37 meters (120 feet). Attempts to revive the victim failed.

The accident is under investigation by the Marine Safety Office in Providence, R.I., a branch of the Coast Guard.
