Injured diver discharged from hospital, search called off for missing buddy

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (30 Aug 2005) -- The scuba diver who got the bends diving in Cook Strait has been discharged from hospital.

The 48-year-old male diver was being treated at Christchurch Hospital, which has a hyperbaric medicine unit that treats about 10 scuba divers a year.

The diver was injured when he and his buddy were dragged down to a depth of 64 meters (209 feet) which scuba diving off Awash Rocks, south of the Brother Islands.

Police have called off the search for Malcolm Karl, 43, but are continuing to investigate the accident.
