BODEGA BAY, California (8 Sep 2005) -- A diver who went missing off the mouth of the Russian River has drowned.

Mark Messmer, a 31-year-old resident of Sonoma County, was fishing and diving for abalone from a kayak when he disappeared.

Messmer's friend asked a person on the beach to call 911. He then started searching and found the victim's body on the sea bottom.

Attempts to revive the diver with CPR failed and the victim was pronounced dead by the Sonoma County Coroner's Office.
