PORT DOUGLAS, Australia (19 Sep 2005) -- A diver died from an apparent heart attack at the Great Barrier Reef. Police told CDNN a 59-year-old man was snorkel diving with a dive boat crew member at Agincourt Reef off Port Douglas when he suffered what was believed to be a heart attack. The dive crew pulled the diver aboard the dive boat and administered CPR, however, attempts to revive the victim failed. A helicopter transported the victim to Cairns Base Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police are investigating the accident said there is no evidence of negligence. | | WARNING: Scuba Diving and Pre-existing Medical Conditions | It is not clear to what extent stress factors unique to the use of underwater life support equipment (SCUBA) affect pre-existing medical conditions such as heart disease and obesity. Cyber Diver recommends that all certified and uncertified divers including tourists involved in "Discover Scuba" resort courses pass a physical examination within six months of diving. People with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart disease and obesity are advised not to participate in scuba diving activities. |
