JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — An air search for missing diver Charles Heyns was called off but two boats continued to look for him late on Friday afternoon. Heyns, an experienced diver from Sunset Beach, disappeared during a night dive near Vulcan Rock off Hout Bay on Thursday. During the search, rescuers found the decomposed body of another man, believed to be that of a fisherman who went missing two weeks ago when his boat capsized. There was no sign of a second fisherman who disappeared at the same time. Brad Geyser, NSRI Hout Bay station commander, said the area between Duiker Island and Vulcan Rock was referred to as a washing machine because the water "boiled". "There is a lot of wave activity there and the water gets squeezed through the channel." Geyser said that they had searched all the areas suggested by the Marine Rescue Co-Ordinating Centre which used sophisticated computer software to predict where Heyns was most likely to be found. It looked at factors like wind speed and direction, currents and time of year to make predictions as accurate as possible. Geyser said they had searched all day and were going over some of the same areas. He said at least 40 Wilderness Search and Rescue personnel had looked under "every bush and stone" from Sandy Bay to the Sentinel in case Heyns had come ashore, but no luck. Heyns's wife Jeannie and two sons aged 11 and 15 were anxiously waiting for news at Hout Bay harbour late on Friday. SOURCE - IOL |
