Trödje, Sweden (15 Nov 2005) -- The search for a missing 17-year-old scuba diving student has been called off.

The Swedish Coastguard called off the search which involved the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC).

"We have given up hope," said Mathias Hansson, deputy rescue leader at the MRCC. "The coastguard divers and the boy's friends have been down several times to try to find him, but without result."

According to witnesses, the young diver went missing shortly after descending on a course dive.

The course instructor and other student divers launched an underwater search but after failing to find the missing diver, they contacted the MRCC.

Searchers said there were no strong currents in the area.

The accident is under investigation by the police and the MRCC.
