POMPANO BEACH, Florida (5 Dec 2005) -- A scuba diver who died off Pompano Beach after complaining of breathing problems was found to have medical problems.

A medical examiner has determined that scuba diving accident victim, Hubert Matthews, 64, had cardiovascular disease.

Mathews experienced problems at the surface prior to descending on his second dive with Scuba Time, a dive boat operator.

Friends who were part of the dive group pulled the victim aboard the dive boat and initiated CPR while heading back to port where paramedics were standing by.

After the boat reached shore, Matthews was rushed to North Broward Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Although the dive industry urges dive operators to target aging boomers, It is not clear to what extent stress factors unique to the use of underwater life support equipment (SCUBA) affect pre-existing medical conditions such as heart disease and obesity.

    WARNING: Scuba Diving and
    Pre-existing Medical Conditions

It is not clear to what extent stress factors unique to the use of underwater life support equipment (SCUBA) affect pre-existing medical conditions such as heart disease and obesity.

Cyber Diver recommends that all certified and uncertified divers including tourists involved in "Discover Scuba" resort courses pass a physical examination within six months of diving.

People with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart disease and obesity are advised not to participate in scuba diving activities.
