CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (19 Mar 2006) -- Helicopters and boats are searching for a scuba diver who went missing off Motunau Island, 70 kilometers north of Christchurch.

Police told CDNN that rescue teams responded to the emergency at about 9am, one hour after 41-year-old Stephen John Sintes of Christchurch failed to surface according to his dive plan.

Sintes was diving with friends on a reef off Motunau Island when he disappeared.

At least 12 boats are involved in the search which has covered 144 square nautical miles so far.

Sintes is the third scuba diver who has gone missing off Motunau Island during the past two years
