PORT HARDY, Canada (26 Apr 2006) -- The body of 74-year-old Richard H. Colyer of Bellingham, Washington, was recovered Apr. 21 from 80 metres of water at Browning Pass.
Coyley went missing at 2 p.m. on Tues., Apr. 19 during a routine recreational dive at the same location. Foul play is not suspected, police say, but an autopsy will be performed in Comox next week.

led by Port Hardy RCMP, the recovery was conducted in fair weather by the RCMP dive team and a remote-operated underwater vehicle from Canada Fisheries, says Cpl. D. Herman of Port Hardy RCMP.

Coyler was an experienced warm water diver who was reported missing after his diving partner lost sight of him during a dive near Hurst Island. The men were part of charter dive group.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) was notified and quickly dispatched a search and rescue vessel from the Port Hardy Coast Guard station, and a Cormorant helicopter from Comox, says Capt. Michael Grenko of JRCC.

The search continued by air and sea for three hours, then was turned over to RCMP as a missing person case.

"Diving incidents are not usually handled by us," explains Grenko. "But we help on a humanitarian basis."
