BRISBANE, Australia (29 Apr 2006) -- A scuba diver found unconscious at the surface was winched aboard a rescue helicopter from a dive boat and rushed to Royal Brisbane Hospital.

Officials said the injured diver was a male in his mid-50s who was suffering from decompression sickness (the bends).

The scuba diving accident occured at about 8am at Flinders Reef at Moreton Island.

When the diver was found unconscious at the surface, the dive boat crew immediately called for a rescue helicopter and initiated CPR.

According to the Counter Disaster and Rescue Service, the injured diver regained consciousness before the helicopter arrived at the dive boat.

The diver was first taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital and then transferred to Wesley Hospital for hyperbaric treatment in a recompression chamber.

A hospital official said the man is expected to make a full recovery.
