ZURRIEQ, Malta (5 May 2006) -- A teenager has died scuba diving in Malta.

Simon Farrugia, 17, died while scuba diving off Wied iz-Zurrieq.

According to police, Farrugia separated from his buddy and may have ascended too quickly.

Other divers aboard a boat spotted the victim struggling to stay afloat at the surface.

They picked him up and took him to shore but it was too late. The victim was already dead when police and paramedics arrived.

Although the scuba diving accident is still under investigation, officials believe the young diver died from decompression sickness.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.
