Scuba diver found dead at Alligator Reef in Florida Keys

ISLAMORADA, Florida (31 May 2006) -- A man who died while scuba diving off Islamorada in the Florida Keys was found with an empty tank and his weight belt removed indicating he may have attempted an emergency ascent after running out of air.

George Sipp, 72, of Jacksonville was scuba diving at Alligator Reef with friends and family who called for help after Sipp failed to surface from the dive.

About one hour later, boaters searching the area found the victim's body floating at the surface where the water depth was about six meters (20 feet).

According to police, Sipp was an experienced diver.

SCUBA DIVING FATALITY: The victim died scuba diving at Alligator Reef off Islamorada.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office on Wednesday to determine the cause of death.
