BRIDLINGTON, UK (5 June 2006) -- The search for a British scuba diver who went missing about 20 miles off Bridlington was called off at about 9pm.

The search involved a helicopter, three rescue vessels, and the warship Ledbury.

The diver was reported missing at about 2pm some 20 miles off Bridlington by the crew of the dive boat 'Providence'.

The crew reported seeing the diver in distress at the surface but he disappeared beneath the waves before the dive boat could reach him.

After receiving a distress call, the Coastguard launched two lifeboats from Humber and Bridlington, which were joined by the Hornsea Independent Rescue boat, a rescue helicopter and the warship 'Ledbury'.

It is still not clear why the diver encountered problems and was unable to establish positive buoyancy after he surfaced.

The search is expected to resume at dawn.
