DWEJRA, Gozo, Malta (2 July 2006) -- An experienced female diver from Glasgow died while scuba diving in Malta on a family holiday.

Jane Gurney, 45, was diving with family members off Dwejra when she apparently ran out of air.

According to local officials, Gurney had descended to a depth of about 16 meters for 30 minutes when she encountered problems and tried to ascend.

Other divers told police they witnessed Gurney swallowing water as she struggled to reach the surface.

Other divers pulled the victim to the beach where paramedics tried but failed to revive her.

The scuba diving accident is under investigation and an autopsy has been scheduled.

Gurney's parents have traveled to Gozo to make arrangements to return the body of their daughter to Scotland.
