TYLER, Texas (18 July 2006) -- A PADI scuba diving instructor drowned after a freak accident at Scuba Center in Tyler.

Barbara McAlpin, 47, was rushed to East Texas Medical Center after she was found unconscious at the bottom of Scuba Center's indoor diver training pool.

Five hours later, she was pronounced dead by hospital doctors.

According to a married couple who were taking a scuba diving course at Scuba Center, McAlpin dived to the bottom of the training pool to recover a snorkel. She was wearing a weight belt but had no scuba unit.

Several minutes later, the student divers who had been preparing for their diving class realized that McAlpin had not resurfaced.

The husband pulled the unconscious instructor from the pool and initiated CPR while his wife called for help.
