Diver dies after being swept out to sea

WHITLEY BAY, UK (9 Aug 2006) -- A woman died after she was swept into the sea off North Tyneside while preparing for a dive.

She was with two other women, who were also swept from St Mary's Island at Whitley Bay on Wednesday afternoon, but who managed to swim back to land.

A search and rescue operation was mounted by the coastguard, assisted by a Sea King helicopter from RAF Boulmer.

After an hour, the woman was found by coastguards and taken to North Tyneside Hospital, where she later died.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said that she has been found about 200m out to sea.

It is thought that the women were walking along a causeway connecting the island to the mainland, when they were swept away by the rising tide.
