RANA COUNTY, Norway (16 Aug 2006) -- A Norwegian cave diver died in Plura cave while diving with a Megalodon rebreather.

Ståle Tveitane, 37, was diving with a buddy diver some 1200 meters (3937 ft) inside the cave at a depth of about 110 meters (361 ft) when he encountered equipment problems.

Although details of the accident are still sketchy, the buddy diver attempted an emergency ascent with Tveitane who apparently was already unconscious.

With his own life in peril, the buddy diver had to leave the victim at a depth of 75 meters (246 ft).

After ascending, the buddy diver was treated with oxygen.

Police have banned all "recreational" diving at Plura cave until authorities recover the victim's body.

After that, officials plan to introduce a new system which will require divers to obtain a permit to dive in Plura cave.
