Dead diver ID'd as brother of convicted official

SOUTH GATE, California (17 Aug 2006) -- A diver found drowned some three miles offshore near the Los Angeles Channel yesterday has been identified as the younger brother of a convicted ex-South Gate official.

Authorities say Mahatma Gandhi Robles -- brother of former treasurer Albert Robles -- was diving near a sunken wreck Wednesday when he disappeared.

The county coroner is investigating the 40-year-old's cause of death. South Gate officials say Robles was a trained diver.

Albert Robles was convicted last year on federal corruption charges. He has not been sentenced.
