HOUSTON, Texas (21 Aug 2006) -- A scuba diver suffering from decompression sickness was medevaced from the Gulf of Mexico to Herman Memorial Hospital in Houston. The 66-year-old diver from Freeport was scuba diving from the dive boat "Spree" in an area known as "Flower Gardens", which is about 176 kilometers southeast of Galveston, Texas. The dive boat crew called for help after the diver complained of numbness in his shoulder, a sign of deco mpression sickness. The US Coast Guard scrambled an HH-65C "Dolphin" rescue helicopter from its Houston Air Station and hoisted the injured diver aboard at 2:18pm. At 3:30pm, the Coast Guard helicopter reached the Herman Memorial Hospital where the diver was treated in a hyperbaric chamber. | | US Coast Guard HH-65C "Dolphin" rescue helicopter.
