California man dies free diving off San Clemente Island

LOS ANGELES, California (9 Oct 2006) -- A 20-year-old man died while free diving off San Clemente Island.

The diver was reported missing by a charter boat at about 2:50pm.

The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the missing diver emergency with a search vessel, however, before it arrive at the scene of the diving accident, the charter crew spotted the diver's body floating at the surface.

The victim was brought to the 22nd Street Pier in Los Angeles Harbor at about 8:30pm.

The accident is under investigation by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department and the Los Angeles County Coroner's office.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is investigating the accident.
