LLANDUDNO BEACH, South Africa (9 Oct 2006) -- A scuba diver is in stable condition after being swept out to sea 300 metres off Llandudno Beach.

The diver, 23, was diving solo at a depth of about 12 meters when he made a low on air ascent.

At the surface, the diver was overpowered by three meter waves and 20-knot west-northwesterly winds brought on by a cold front and outgoing spring tides.

Municipal pro lifeguards Julian Paul and Warren Higgens spotted the diver and headed out into the heavy surf with rescue torpedo buoys.

Paul and Higgens found the exhausted and nearly drowned diver in the huge waves and somehow managed to pull him back to shore against the tide and wind.
