NORTHLAND, New Zealand (16 Nov 2006) -- As darkness settled in, officials suspended the search for a scuba diver who went missing off Ninety Mile Beach earlier today.

Police launched the search, which included a helicopter and surf life saving boats, immediately after the diver was reported missing at about 2pm.

A police spokesman told CDNN the search will resume tomorrow morning for the missing diver who is a male in his mid-50s.

"Tomorrow we intend to get a fixed-wing aeroplane up at first light and our police dive squad and the Far North dive squad will be up there at 8am to start searching again," said Neil Pennington, the search and rescue co-ordinator for Northland police.
