AUCKLAND, New Zealand (6 Jan 2007) -- Two male divers suffering decompression sickness were airlifted to hospital yesterday afternoon.

The two men got the bends after ascending too quickly while scuba diving at Hahei off Coromandel Peninsula.

According to a Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance spokesman, two helicopters were deployed to take the injured divers to Auckland City Hospital.

St. John Ambulance paramedics treated the divers at the scene of the scuba diving accident and during the helicopter flights to hospital.
