EUREKA, California (22 Mar 2007) -- The search for an underwater photographer who disappeared off Cape Mendocino has been called off.

Kawika Chetron, 35, was apparently scuba diving alone at Blunts Reef west of Cape Mendocino when he went missing.

Coast Guard search and rescue units searched for three days but found no trace of the Bay Area resident after locating his 17-ft Boston Whaler "Rapture".

The search encompassed a coastal area extending 40 miles offshore from Cape Mendocino to Fort Bragg.

The Coast Guard deployed a C-130 fixed wing aircraft from Air Station Sacramento, HH-65 Dolphin helicopters from Air Station Humboldt Bay and San Francisco, a 378-ft high endurance cutter from San Diego, an 87-ft coastal patrol boat from Humboldt Bay and 47-ft motor life boats from stations Noyo River and Humboldt Bay during the search operation.

Chetron was a graduate of Harvard College and earned a master's degree in engineering at Stanford.

He had been diving since 1986 and bought his first underwater camera in 2004.
