ST. JOHN, Virgin Islands (28 Mar 2007) -- A tourist died after a scuba diving accident in the Virgin Islands.

Mary Ellen Davis, 45, died less than an hour after she aborted her dive at about 9:20am and surfaced struggling to breathe and calling for help.

Captain James Lane of the SeaQuest dive boat jumped into the water and swam about 60 yards before he reached Davis, who was vomiting.

Lane inflated her BC, released her weight belt and pulled her back to the boat.

At about 9:50am, SeaQuest arrived at the V.I. Port Authority dock in Cruz Bay where an ambulance was standing by.

The victim was rushed to Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Clinic where she was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was performed but the medical examiner's office has not yet released the results.

The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the scuba diving accident.
