Man in stable condition after scuba diving accident in Florida

VENICE, Florida (2 Apr 2007) -- A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter rescued an experienced diver who is in stable condition after a scuba diving accident in Florida.

Ken Davis, 45, surfaced from from a 36.5 meter dive at about 2:15pm with shortness of breath and other symptoms of the bends (decompression sickness).

Friends who were diving with Davis called for help and the Coast Guard responded with a rescue helicopter that was training in the area.

The Coast Guard crew from Air Station Clearwater medevaced Davis to Page Field in Fort Myers where he was rushed to South West Regional Hospital by ambulance.

Coast Guard officials said Davis was an experienced diver with 30 years of experience.

It is not clear what caused the accident.
