TUKWILA, Washington (3 Apr 2007) -- A woman who was practicing staying underwater in a Tukwila city pool and was found floating and unresponsive during a swimming class died Sunday, officials said.

Candice Green, 26, was practicing for an upcoming trip that included scuba diving, City Administrator Rhonda Berry said.

Green was getting ready for a honeymoon scuba trip to Mexico, KING/5 reported.

Green died because of a lack of oxygen to her brain, the King County Medical Examiner's Office reported.

"We're still trying to piece together what happened," Berry said Tuesday.

"From what we can determine so far, it looks like all our procedures were followed."

Green was a capable swimmer who had already completed three six-week swimming classes, with each class meeting twice a week, Berry said.

"She wanted to increase her comfort level with being underwater," Berry said.

A lap swimmer noticed Green floating in the water Thursday night, and lifeguards pulled her out and performed CPR until medical aid crews arrived.

Green was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead early Sunday, officials said. Tukwila police continue to investigate the death.

The pool, at 4414 S. 144th St., is supervised by an experienced manager, Berry said.

She added that safety procedures there meet accepted standards.
