BROCKVILLE, Canada (29 May 2007) -- A man died while scuba diving in the St. Lawrence River east of Brockville.

Vyes Thibault, 53, was pronounced dead at Brockville General Hospital on Monday morning.

Authorities said the victim was diving with friends off a private boat when he encountered problems at a depth of about 27.5 meters (90 feet).

Police responded to a call for help at 9:57am after one of the divers in the group called the Coast Guard.

When rescuers arrived at the scene of the scuba diving accident, Thibault was unconscious.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the victim but he never regained consciousness.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

The area where Thibault was diving is a popular dive site where several divers have died.
