WHITTLESEY, UK (9 June 2007) -- An inquest into the death of a Yaxley man who lost his life during a diving trip at a lake near Whittlesey has heard how he died. Lee Stanhope (36) died during the final day of a diving trip at Gildenburgh Water last Friday when he became separated from his two friends. When he failed to surface the alarm was raised. Fifteen minutes later, his body was recovered from the water and he was taken to Peterborough District Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Sitting at Wisbech Magistrates' Court yesterday, deputy coroner David Osbourne opened the inquest into Mr Stanhope's death. He told the court the cause of Mr Stanhope's death was cerebral gas embolism – a serious consequence of diving which is associated with decompresion sickness and has the potential to cause severe brain problems. The inquest heard there was also evidence of pulmonary braotrauma – an injury caused by the expansion of air held in the lungs during descent. | | Speaking after her husband's death, Lee's devastated wife, Ann, said: "He was larger than life and made everyone laugh, and that is how I want him to be remembered." Mr Stanhope's inquest will be concluded at a later date.
