JUPITER, Florida (12 June 2007) -- A 24-year-old man who had no scuba certification died while scuba diving with family and friends off Jupiter Inlet. Timothy Meyers, of Cleveland, Ohio, was found unconscious at the sea bottom about 280 meters off a Jupiter beach. Paramedics responded to a 911 emergency call and rushed the victim to Jupiter Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that Meyers was not a certified scuba diver. While it is not illegal to dive without formal training and certification, anyone interested in learning to scuba dive should enroll in an agency sanctioned scuba diving course. "It's all about reducing the inherent risks of diving," said CDNN Managing Editor Freeman Washington. "The most effective way to enhance one's personal safety is to train with an experienced, responsible scuba diving instructor who understands exactly what it takes to assist us in mastering the fundamental skills of scuba diving." | | "Buoyancy control, safety stops, underwater emergency response procedures and the proper use of underwater life support equipment all require thorough, responsible and demanding training," added Washington. "Despite the trend to grow the dive industry with quickie courses and instant certification courses, there are simply no shortcuts to diver safety." © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORKSCUBA FORUMDISCUSS THIS TOPIC - Dive in and have your say at Scuba Forum |
