SEATTLE, Washington (1 July 2007) -- A man died scuba diving on Saturday evening off Alki Point in Seattle.

The scuba diving victim was diving with a friend who said he surfaced at about 8:20pm after a wave separated them.

Typically divers descend in two-person buddy teams and if they lose contact with each other, they surface after one minute if unable to reestablish contact.

In this case the dive buddy ascended, waited at the surface but when his friend failed to resurface, he descended again to search for the missing diver.

After searching in vain for about 30 minutes, the buddy diver resurfaced and called for help.

The Seattle Fire Department Rescue Diver team responded to the missing diver emergency and found the victim about 15 meters offshore at a depth of less than 2 meters.

The victim was unconscious, not breathing and his regulator was not in his mouth.

After rescue divers brought the victim to shore, paramedics initiated CPR and rushed him to Harborview Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
