WHITSUNDAYS, Australia (2 July 2007) -- A 28-year-old German man on holiday in Australia died while scuba diving in the Whitsundays.

Police told CDNN the victim surfaced from a dive at Bait Reef northeast of Hayman Island at about noon and started to climb aboard the dive boat but then fell back into the water.

After pulling the unconscious diver back onboard the boat, the crew initiated CPR and called for help.

About two hours later a CQ Rescue Helicopter finally arrived at the dive boat but it was too late.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
