KEY WEST, Florida (9 July 2007) -- A young man died while scuba diving in an area where Florida officials want to boost tourism by sinking military ships as artificial reefs.

John Lumley, 23, was scuba diving at the USS Curb artificial reef site with two other divers when something went wrong.

The accident happened when the divers were at a depth of about 49 meters (160 feet) on their second dive of the day.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Michael O'Conner, 38, and Mark Woods, 46, failed to maintain contact with Lumley, initiated a search for the missing diver and found him unconscious a few minutes later.

O'Conner and Woods brought Lumley to the surface and initiated CPR but failed to revive the victim.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine how the 23-year-old diver died.
