BELLINGHAM, Washington — A young woman died today at St. Joseph Hospital after she was severely injured while scuba diving at Lummi Rocks on Saturday. Chief Criminal Deputy Jeff Parks of the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office told CDNN that Jennifer Coyne, 25, was fatally injured while scuba diving on a dive trip with Seattle Scuba School, which is owned by Scuba Schools Group dive shop franchiser, Craig Gillespie. According to unconfirmed reports, Coyne was a novice scuba diver who learned to scuba dive at Seattle Scuba School just two months before she died. Witnesses said she was diving with another novice diver when she encountered problems at a depth of about 18 meters and apparently lost consciousness. The buddy diver was unable to rescue her but Gillespie finally managed to get her up to the surface. The crew of the Deep Sea dive charter boat called for help at about 10:30 am and Coast Guard Station Bellingham launched a high-speed 33-ft rescue boat. The Coast Guard rescue team took over CPR as they rushed the scuba diving accident victim to shore where EMS were standing by. Coyne was taken to St. Joseph Hospital, but she never recovered and was pronounced dead earlier today. Authorities said the fatal scuba diving accident is under investigation. |
